What Your Nails Tell You About Your Health

The appearance of the nails is not only aesthetic, but also nails are indicator of our health. The strange color, shape or fragility of the nails may be an indicator of many diseases.

Nails are part of our body that don’t have a direct blood supply. They are composed of a protein called keratin. When our nails suddenly change the color or become extremely dry and brittle, we should take as a warning of a health problem.

This article is intended primarily for information, so we recommend not to use it for self-diagnosis.

The appearance of nails can be observed in three categories: color, shape and texture of nails.

Shape of nails varies from one person to another. If your fingernails are curled that is a sign of heart problems and respiratory tract. Lack of vitamin B12 can cause flat and thin nails.

Another sign of possible health problems is the texture of the nails. People almost never take it seriously, however it might be a warning sign for some changes in your health condition. Vertical waves on the surface of the nail is a sign of physical and mental stress.

If the nail surface is rippled, this may be a sign of psoriasis or inflammatory arthritis. Dry, brittle nails could be associated with thyroid disease.

The normal nail color is light pink, although for some people may be darker.
Pale nails can be a sign of serious illness, such as: liver disease, anemia or congestive heart failure.

White nails – if nails are white with dark edges, it may be due to liver problems as hepatitis. Another sign of liver problems are yellowish nails.
Zinc or iron deficiency can cause white spots on nails. In addition, other signs that can show that you are suffering from a lack of zinc are hair loss or diminished immunity.

Yellow nails –  Fungal infection is one of the most common reasons of yellow nails . In some cases, yellow nails indicate a more serious condition such as severe lung disease, psoriasis or diabetes and thyroid disease.

Bluish nails – Nails with a bluish tint can be a sign that the body is not getting enough oxygen. This could indicate an infection of the lungs. Some heart problems are associated with the occurrence of blue nails.

A well-balanced nutrition is essential for health. Food rich in nitrates is a requirement for a healthy body. Therefore, pay attention to nutrition. Eat fresh vegetables, drink plenty of water and creates a habit of eating fresh salad with every meal.

What is required to eat for healthy fingernails?

– Enough proteins through cereals, legumes, nuts, seeds and oats
– Vitamins from fruits and vegetables
– Minerals from broccoli, fish and onions.
