Diabetes can cause severe health problems like kidney failure, heart disease, lower-extremity amputations, and blindness.

Higher levels of blood sugar for a prolonged period of time can lead to severe health disease known as diabetes. There are number of reasons for increased levels of blood sugar, such as consumption of a lot of sugar, physical inactivity, genetic predispositions, stress, drinking soda smoking, etc. The symptoms of type two diabetes are feeling worn out, being irritable, weight gain, impotence, wounds that will not heal, yeast infections, dry mouth, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, peeing a lot, blurry vision, and feeling of  thirst.

The glycemic index (GI) is a measurement of how much the foods that contain carbohydrates are raising the blood sugar level. The index uses 0 to 100 point scale. The higher the food’s index is, the more it influences (raises) the level of blood glucose.


Foods with 0 – 54 index are the bottom glycemic foods

  • 1 egg – index 0;
  • 1 cup of hummus – index 6
  • 1 cup of broccoli – index 10;
  • 1 cup of walnuts – index 15;
  • 1 cup of cherries – index 22;
  • 1 cup of yogurt – index 23;
  • 1 cup of butter beans – index 31;
  • 1 cup of kidney beans – index 34
  • 1 apple – index 38;
  • 1 cup of spaghetti – index 42;
  • 1 cup of green grapes – index 46;
  • 1 carrot – index 47;
  • 1 orange – index 48;
  • 1 banana – index 52;

Foods with 55 – 69 index value are the moderate glycemic foods:

  • 1 tablespoon of honey – index 55;
  • 1 cup of brown rice index – 55;
  • 1 cup of oatmeal – index 58;
  • 1 cup of white rice – index 64;

Foods with 70 – 100 index value are high glycemic foods:

  • 1 slice of white bread – index 70;
  • 2 cups popcorn – index 72;
  • 1 medium potato – index 85;
  • 50gr of glucose – index 100;
