Sex addiction is an overwhelming desire to have sex all the time. The sufferer is usually preoccupied with thoughts and desires that lead to uncontrolled sexual demands. In the US, 30 million people suffer from sexual addiction. Many of these addicts usually become sexually aroused with anything that might be used to satisfy their sexual desire.
Causes Of Sexual Addiction
Sexual obsession has been linked to various factors. Some of the factors include social, psychological, emotional and personality disorders. Some of the causes include:
Mental State
Researchers have found out that certain mental disorders are highly linked to hyper sexuality. Depression is one of the major causes of sex addiction. This is because if someone is depressed, his mental attitude could easily be diverted to only think about sex all the time since sex could be the only source of entertainment. Other mental illnesses that could also see sex as the only source of entertainment include bipolar disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder.
Anxiety
When anxiety sets in, sex is perceived by many as the only way to relieve it. This is because it soothes the emotional pain someone could be going through. Sexual obsession is not something that the addicts plan but rather when sexual thoughts strike in, the sufferers cannot think of anything else.
Certain Medications
Dopamine and Apomorphine replacement therapy have been associated with increasing the risk of sexual obsession.
Sexual Abuse
Many sex addicts have been found to have been sexually abused as a child.
Learning Disability
Many people who have or seem to have learning disabilities tend to develop sexual addiction in their lifetime though the actual link between the two is not well established.
Personal History
People who have had or have a certain natural addiction are also likely to develop sexual obsession in their life. This is because of the links that may exist between the addictions.
Symptoms Of Sexual Addiction
Frequent Sex With Multiple Sex Partners
Many sex addicts tend to have multiple sex partners. This is because of dissatisfaction that one partner cannot meet their sex demands.
Extramarital Affairs
This applies mostly to women and men who are married. A sex addict who is married cannot be fully satisfied by his/her spouse and thus the only way to meet and satisfy their sexual demands is to seek someone outside the marriage.
Frequent Masturbation
Sex addicts often masturbate in order to meet their urge for sex. This is because masturbation takes away the urge and makes them feel comfortable.
Pornography
It has been found that many sex addicts are prone to watching pornography and other sex related materials. All these efforts are directed at satisfying their sexual demands.
Engaging In Sexual Behaviors That Are Socially Unacceptable
Some of the socially unacceptable behaviors include rape, bestiality, pedophilia and sadomasochism. Sexual addicts do engage in these unacceptable activities just to fulfill and quench their thirst for sex.
Prostitution/Escorts
Some people become prostitutes not because they don’t have money but rather, to quench their sexual desires. This is attributed to a lack of enough sex from their partners.
